Planning Your Move: A 6-Week Countdown Checklist

Moving later in life can feel like a mountain — even if you're excited about the next chapter. The sorting, the packing, the planning, the decisions… it’s a lot.
But with a simple step-by-step countdown, the whole process becomes calmer, clearer, and more manageable.

Here’s the 6-week plan I use with my senior clients here in Halifax to help keep everything on track — without the stress.

6 Weeks Before: Start With the Easy Wins

This is your warm-up phase.
No heavy lifting, no pressure.

• Walk through your home and make a list of what you’ll take.
• Note what you want to give to family or friends.
• Start a box labeled “Donate.”
• Begin gathering important paperwork.
• Decide what you’ll need help with — packing, cleaning, moving, or organizing.

Think of this as your “getting your head in the game” week.

5 Weeks Before: Begin the Downsizing

This week is about small, simple decisions.

• Tackle one room at a time — no more.
• Sort items into Keep / Donate / Gift / Toss.
• Arrange donation pickup if needed.
• Call family members to collect anything they’re claiming.
• Begin setting aside items you won’t need before the move.

The goal is progress, not perfection.

4 Weeks Before: Get Your Services Booked

This is the week to lock in your help.

• Book your moving company.
• Arrange for packing support if needed.
• Schedule cleaners or junk removal.
• Confirm your move-in date with your new home, condo, or community.
• Make notes of items requiring special handling (antiques, art, electronics, etc.).

Booking early saves money and stress — especially in peak season.

3 Weeks Before: Start Packing the Non-Essentials

Now the real progress begins.

• Pack books, décor, linens, framed photos, and off-season clothing.
• Label every box by room and contents.
• Keep medication, important documents, and valuables separate.
• Decide what furniture is going and what’s not.
• Check that you have enough boxes, tape, and packing supplies.

Slow and steady makes this manageable.

2 Weeks Before: Prepare for the Transition

This week is about organization.

• Confirm moving day times with your moving company.
• Prepare a “first night” box — medications, chargers, toiletries, pajamas, bedding, kettle, snacks.
• Notify service providers of your move:
– power
– phone/internet
– insurance
– mail forwarding
• Check your new floor plan to make sure furniture will fit.

This step avoids surprises on moving day.

1 Week Before: Final Touches & Gentle Packing

You’re almost there.

• Pack your kitchen essentials last.
• Set aside clothing for the week.
• Finish decluttering.
• Defrost your freezer if needed.
• Do a light cleaning so movers can work safely.
• Walk through your home to ensure nothing is overlooked.

At this point, your home will look more open, less overwhelming, and moving day will feel much less chaotic.

Moving Day: Keep It Simple

When you're not 25 anymore, the key to a smooth moving day is pacing and support.

• Let the movers do the heavy lifting — that’s their job.
• Keep medications and essentials with you, not in the moving truck.
• Take breaks, stay hydrated, and don’t push past your comfort level.
• Have someone with you if the day feels emotionally heavy — it often does.
• Breathe. This is a big day, but it’s also a new beginning.
